H for Horror

I love watching horror movies even if I put that pillow over my eyes, pinch a person sitting next to me or myself but I just make sure I watch them. It is all exciting when I watch them but in a later point of time when I have to be alone at home, it scares the hell out of me. Every moment feels eerie and suspicious. Following are few real life moments I faced which made me think that may be ghosts/spirits exist!

Scene 1:

I call my physiotherapist whenever my cervical pain shoots up...We know each other from many years and naturally we end up chatting a lot. She was/is my savior during miserable pain episodes specially in COVID times. Anyhow in the second guest bed room where I work, I  hear a faint rocking chair noise coming from the walls once in a while. It's quite a hollow noise as if an old swinging chair is being used. I ignored many times and we even had a discussion in apartment WhatsApp group to understand what it is...but everyone said they can't hear the sound. My husband and I even joked that this is Lockdown side-effect and we are listening too much to everything at home. One day the sound was coming as always (there is no special timing) but my physio noticed the sound and told it's eerie isn't it? I said nowadays always when we sit for session it's starting....and we laughed! As and when I told that, the sound pitch increased and we were both super scared IN REAL. It stops intermittently and then starts. This happened 2-3 times. Whenever we sit for physio in that room the sound starts. I just couldn't get used to it. It was an irritable sound. It comes even in the late night hours. I slowly learned to ignore it. Some how on one fine day the sound stopped. It could have been a cradle , rocking chair, a swinging chair or just some rats or worms making sounds, but whatever it was...it did make us uneasy!

Scene 2:

Babies are adorable, their coo coos and toothless smiles warm the heart instantly but the way they look at nothing,  point and smile, talk, will remind you all possible horror stories you read, heard or watched. There have been many moments when I am alone with Zaara... and her random imaginary friends made me squirm (thanks to all the movies I watch).

This happened recently. One night my husband went to a late night wedding reception. Zaara was doing her thing and I was absorbed in some daily chores. The light in the last room starts rapidly blinking. I try not to think about it and keep folding clothes, hoping to finish it in a jiffy and run to the daughter in the hall for some courage.

πŸ₯²πŸ˜ΆThat's when she comes running to me speaking in a fearful voice..."There is one more girl in the hall maa...come see!"

She is so pleased to see me almost shitting my pants and instantly laughs off pointing at that one more girl - Gaby - a cartoon character in Netflix.

🀒 I breathe normal again, shout my lungs out and she rolls laughing. I also realise that the blinking smart bulb was due to some glitch in Alexa with which it is associated (I hate smart homes). Even if it's just bulb malfunction and daughter's prank, I had heart in my mouth as the unsettling feeling didn't go!

Scene 3:

This must have happened almost to all of you. Have you ever been in a situation where for the love of God, you can't find your book, phone, ear phones or anything which you frequently use!? I have been in such situations many times. Sometimes I genuinely misplace them, but many a times it feels like some naughty ghost is hiding my belongings and placing them back in the same place I was searching, after my fervent search....and getting pleased by my stress and confusion! It happens so many times to me, with my phone, wallet, mask, etc.

When I say this, my mom says, "It's not naughty spirit. It is body present mind absent reckless human who is you - YOU can never live in an organized manner." :) That's it - I feel all the ghosts would feel defeated by that closing statement ;) and I really do hope she is true and I am false!

Do share if you have had any spooky/eerie experiences!?

  2. Scene 2 is cute. Last week before sleeping I forgot to remove the plug of the bedside lamp from the socket. Somehow mid-night there was a flicker and I felt light thrown on my eyes constantly. I woke up to see the bulb flickering. It was a little scary because I thought I had removed the plug. But maybe I hadn't. I'll leave it to that

  3. Once I was watching a horror film about giant mutant wasps breeding in the sewer - it might have been called the hive. a friend had come over and afterwards I offered to drive him home because it was a windy night. I went through to the bedroom to get mt car keys when suddenly there was a loud "Whhoooo" noise coming from the ceiling - it made me jump! Was it guiant mutant wasps infesting the roof space? Neither my friend nor I could make sense of it. Eventually, I figured out that some silicone filler I had put between the ceiling boards (it was an old cottage - very draughty) had come loose on one side and was vibrating like a mouth-organ reed... Very scary in the light of that film!

  6. I was watching a Tamil movie once in which there is a scene of a cat drinking blood and as we were watching it there was a strong gust of wind and a black plastic bag from the dining table fell on my face at the same moment the cat sprang at someone on screen. I have never screamed so much in life ...ha ha... But i dont like horror genre and seldom watch them ..

    1. That's scary. I scream hard even in theatres! I think I shouted horribly when some one played a prank on me and scared thru a window when it was very calm .....it was a cousin of mine ...to scare me after a horror movie

  7. Ahh I love horror movies too! Watching films is always very fun, but reading horror usually calms me down so much

  8. I don't like horror at all. My imagination supplies me with enough hoary tales.

  9. I stay away from horror movies. Enough terrible things are happening in the real world.
Have you ever found out about the strange sound?

  10. I can only take so much horror. I agree with the commenter above that enough horrible is happening in reality. When the pandemic shutdown began two years ago, I was hesitant to read any horror or dystopian books, but still ended up reading a few.

  11. I love horror. I especially like a good ghost story done well in film. The Grudge springs to mind, and The Haunting of Hill House.
Our house used to be haunted by the previous resident for the first few years after we moved in. We had the attic converted to a room, and at first we put the light switch downstairs next to the kitchen door. It was where the old light switch had been for what was our dining room, before the electrics were redone. Numerous times, we would turn the lights off upstairs, only for them to be back on in the morning. Once we moved the light switch, it completely stopped happening.
We never saw her, but sometimes we could sense she was there. And once she spoke to us. After her son called to say hello one afternoon, she said hello to me and my husband at different times. She was the one who insisted we have the house. She moved into a nursing home, which was why the house was being sold, and we put an offer in first - there were other higher offers, but she insisted we were first and so should get it. We think she moved on once she was satisfied we were settled properly in the house.

  12. Not a horror fan! Your Scene 1 has me wondering. I have a couple of stories, too. I've been working from home since the pandemic, and one day, up in my son's old bedroom (he's in his 30's and on his own), where I work, I hear this rustling, and then, squeaking. Then, more rustling. I'm almost ready to run out of there! Husband put out a mousetrap and we caught several. The sound stopped, but it's happened several times since. I think, I hope, that it's only mice. Also, I stayed in a haunted bed and breakfast once. Fortunately I didn't know the room I was staying in was haunted until my last evening there. (Nothing happened but I didn't sleep well.)

  18. I can only watch horror movies that are too unrealistic to be feasible. Otherwise I can't take it. I'll be seeing things everywhere. :)

  19. I avoid horror movies because I do want to sleep at night, lol :) Strange occurrence with that noise at your physio's office. I'm sure there was an explanation for it :) I almost wrote for the challenge this year for H - Haunted House because I grew up in one until I was 7 years old (strange occurrences happened there. Won't say what because I'm still needing a few more letter ideas for the challenge and might be able to incorporate that story into one of them, lol) but definitely a weird place to live!

  23. Aaaaaah! That's all I'll say...I can NOT watch horror. You're so brave Afshan. The only film I can recall that I've watched which has very mild shades of horror is 'Stree'...and even that haunted me for a few weeks.

  24. Gahhhh!!! I don't watch scary movies, because I can talk myself into hearing all kinds of things. I live in a 100 year old house, and who knows what happened in it before we ever lived there?! My husband and daughter did talk me into watching Haunting of Hill House during our covid lockdown and it scared the bejeebers out of me!

  25. Horror is the only film genre I cannot watch :(

  26. Whoa, that swing or rocking chair thing was so scary. I am still curious as to what it could be. I share your love for horror movies complete with the pillow / punch or later point in time fear! And yes, share your same stubbornness about still going ahead and watching them anyway! :) I have realized though that I get a little more jumpy with the sudden jump-at-you scenes and sudden sound effects lately too! Maybe getting too old for them :D

  28. I'm not a fan of horror, not in book form nor movie form. I don't mind reading suspense (though movies that try to be suspenseful tend to annoy me), but there has to be a follow-able plot, not just scenes written to scare.

Tasha (commenter above) mentioned The Haunting of Hill House. Shirley Jackson was amazing. And, oddly enough, Agatha Christie wrote a few non-mystery suspense tales, the likes of which could easily have been turned into Hitchcock films.

  29. Waaaoww, I don't believe in ghosts or supernatural phenomenon . But still the talk of it gets me all excited. VERY WELL WRITTEN AFSHAN πŸ‘ πŸ‘Œ πŸ‘ πŸ™Œ really enjoyed reading all the three episodes. The second was my favorite, a little brave girl and and her scared Mommy 😁😁

  30. Holy cats! For Scene 1, I'd wonder if there were animals living inside the walls. I've had raccoons under my floors. They make peculiar noises, especially the babies. I sympathize completely with Scene 3.

  31. I heard lot of such supernatural stories. I think every Hyderabadi has one to say :D As mom said most the times it was Body Present Mind Absent :) I was either lost in the book I read or the meeting I attended or some memory of the past that I miss out to see things around me. The exhaust fan that makes sounds and rotates by itself or the nail scratching sound in the middle of the night. All such things that scared me were created by a pigeon and pet dog!!!

What do you think about this ? I always love to hear back. A comment or a brickbat boosts me to write more but the mud slinging shall be promptly vacuumed.

Thanks for your time :)
